A heads up for anyone following the zoning changes in the CVRD:
On March 31 (5–7pm, online), they’re holding a meeting to introduce the new Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw (4710) — the same 400+ page overhaul many of us have just started digging into.
This isn’t a small update.
This bylaw replaces over 350 existing zones with a single unified system across all electoral areas.
At this meeting, they’re moving it forward through the process and here’s the part that should concern people:
They are recommending that no formal public hearing be held for this bylaw.
For something that affects:
- what you can build on your property
- how your land can be used
- density and development around you
…that’s a big deal.
Yes, they’ve said there will be “engagement” but that’s not the same as a formal public hearing where residents can speak on record before adoption.
This isn’t about being for or against change.
It’s about how big decisions get made.
A region-wide zoning overhaul should come with:
- full transparency
- clear communication
- and meaningful public input at every stage
Right now, it feels like this is being pushed through the system faster than most people can reasonably understand it.
If you care about how your community develops it’s worth paying attention to this meeting.
And in my opinion, we should be formally consulted every step of the way on something this significant.
